The Aiki Te Ryu Karate Kai includes
several methods of training in Kumite. Kumite is the part of
your training which closely resembles combat against another
student. In your study of Kumite it is important to understand
the various levels we implement while you progress through your
training.
IPPON KUMITE
This is the beginning stage of developing
timing, technique and distancing. During this phase of Kumite
training the student will face another student. An attack will
be called out by the Sensei and the student will defend and
counter strike the initial attack in a controlled manner.
NIHON KUMITE
Much like Ippon Kumite except the initial
attack is blocked and a counter strike is launched and the first
person to attack must defend the counter to their original
attack.
SANBON KUMITE
Two students will pair off against each
other. One student will launch a series of three attacks to the
other and then the other student will return three attacks back.
This is done at varying levels from head to groin targeting.
JIYU IPPON KUMITE
Much more free flowing but attacks are still
called out and countered. The difference is that both students
are using natural movement and must decide when to launch the
attack at the other.
JIYU KUMITE
This is "free style" sparring where opponents
move around and attack using various combinations. During this
exercise it is important to focus on control and technique while
remaining safe at your training.
RANDORI
This is adaptive from Aikido and Judo in
which a series of three to five attackers will attempt to grab
or strike at you. During this time you use elements of movement
applied to physics to defend against all attackers with your
countering techniques.
